Coal dust

Fine coal powder that burns efficiently but poses explosion and health risks.

Coal dust is a fine powder produced when coal rock is crushed, ground, or pulverized. Because coal is brittle, dust can also be generated during mining, transport, or mechanical handling. Grinding coal into dust before burning it makes combustion faster and more efficient, and easier to handle. However, when coal dust is suspended in air outside controlled grinding and combustion equipment, it becomes hazardous. It poses an acute danger of forming an explosive mixture in air and a chronic risk of causing lung disease in people who inhale excessive amounts. The particle size of coal dust is often measured in mesh. The British slang term for cheap fuel made of coal dust with small lumps of coal is "nutty slack."

**Energy generation** In thermal power plants, coal is ground into dust using a powdered coal mill. The resulting product, called powdered or pulverized coal, is used in fossil fuel power plants to generate electricity. Pulverized coal is a significant dust explosion hazard because large quantities are suspended in air as they move from the mill to the plant. Explosions have occurred when the flow of coal drops and flames from the burning chamber travel back along the ductwork delivering fuel.
